Definition and Scope
The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) provides personal care services identified in the client's plan of care, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse or other qualified supervisor. A PCA may also perform authorized companion or sitter tasks but does not provide nursing services unless separately licensed and authorized to do so.
Qualifications
- Nurse aide training and competency evaluation program (meeting 42 CFR Part 483, Subpart D)
- A nurse aide competency exam recognized by the Georgia Department of Community Health
- A recognized health care / personal care credentialing program
- A 40-hour training program covering ambulation, personal care, first aid/CPR, home safety, infection control, vital signs, and nutrition
Examples of Duties
- Assist with bathing, hygiene, grooming, dressing, toileting, ambulation, eating, and other daily living activities
- Assist with cleaning, laundry, cooking, and other authorized home-management tasks
- Assist with grocery shopping, errands, and accompanying clients to appointments when authorized
- Observe and report changes in the client's physical, emotional, or environmental condition
- Complete client service records, progress notes, and required documentation after each visit
Orientation & Training
New PCAs attend an initial orientation covering agency policy, Georgia private home care requirements, client rights, protection from abuse/neglect/exploitation, confidentiality, and reporting responsibilities. At least 20 hours of training is completed before providing care, with remaining required training completed within the first six months of employment.
